Six Afghan Police Killed In Insider Attack

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan -- An Afghan police officer and a cook attacked their colleagues at a checkpoint in an assault coordinated with insurgent fighters that left six people dead.

The killings, which occurred on October 19 in the Gereshk district of the southern Helmand province, were the latest in a series by Afghan security personnel targeting their local and foreign colleagues.

In a statement issued on October 20, the provincial governor's office said a police officer and a cook working at the checkpoint who had links with the insurgents opened fire at the police officers shooting dead two policemen.

Insurgents then rushed to the scene, and killed four more.

The police officer was captured as he fled but the cook escaped and remains at large.

The Taliban said the attack was carried out by one of their fighters who had infiltrated police ranks.

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
